How does QR ordering work with your POS and kitchen?
Published · By Foodyx
Short answer
With QR ordering, a guest scans a QR code, opens the menu on their own phone and places an order themselves. If the ordering system is connected to the POS, that order arrives in the POS digitally and goes on to the kitchen. With Foodyx QR Ordering, this runs through POSHUB to Foodyx POS and the kitchen.
What is QR ordering?
QR ordering is a form of self-ordering: the guest orders on their own phone, usually at the table. On the table or elsewhere in the restaurant there is a QR code that leads to the menu. The guest chooses, puts the order together and places it without involving the staff.
That is different from ordering with a staff handheld, such as Mobile POS. There, a member of staff takes the order; with QR ordering, the guest does it themselves.
How does ordering through a QR code work?
The guest scans the code with the phone's camera and arrives in an ordering environment with the menu. The order placed goes to the POS system digitally and from there to the kitchen. At Foodyx, this runs through POSHUB to Foodyx POS.

Does a guest need to install an app?
That depends on the system. Some QR ordering systems open in the phone's browser, so the guest doesn't need to install anything; others use their own app.
No app is needed for Foodyx QR Ordering: the guest scans the QR code and orders in the browser.
How do QR orders reach the kitchen?
Because the guest orders themselves, there is no member of staff between the order and the kitchen. That is why the integration with the POS has to be right: products, choices and notes travel digitally, and the POS sends the order to the kitchen printer or kitchen display where it belongs.
At Foodyx, a QR order arrives through POSHUB on the POS and kitchen display, just like an order at the table.
QR ordering compared with a self-service kiosk
Both are self-ordering, and both can be connected to the POS. Which one fits depends on how guests order from you; they can also exist side by side. Read also how a self-service kiosk works with a POS system.
The difference lies in the device and the place:
- with QR ordering the guest uses their own phone; a self-service kiosk is a shared screen in your restaurant;
- QR ordering usually happens where the guest is sitting, such as at the table; at a self-service kiosk the guest usually orders before eating or when collecting;
- a self-service kiosk needs a screen in your restaurant; for QR ordering, a QR code on the table or on location is enough.
QR ordering compared with Mobile POS
With QR ordering, the guest places the order. With Mobile POS, a member of staff takes the order on a handheld, at the table or on the terrace.
So the difference is who enters the order: with QR the guest, with Mobile POS your staff. At Foodyx, both arrive in the same POS through POSHUB. More about Foodyx Mobile POS.
How does QR Ordering work at Foodyx?
With Foodyx QR Ordering guests scan the QR code at the table, browse the menu and order themselves, in several languages. No app needed. Optionally, guests pay straight away on their own phone, with Wero / iDEAL or credit card, among others.
QR Ordering and Foodyx POS exchange the order through POSHUB. From Foodyx POS it goes to the right kitchen printer, or through POSHUB to Foodyx KDS, depending on your set-up. How QR Ordering works together with your webshop and the kiosk is explained under online ordering for restaurants.
Frequently asked questions
Does a guest need an app?
That differs per system. Not for Foodyx QR Ordering: the guest scans the QR code and orders in the browser.
Does a QR order arrive in the POS automatically?
If the QR system is connected to the POS, yes. At Foodyx, a QR order arrives in Foodyx POS through POSHUB.
Does the order go straight to the kitchen?
Through the POS. Foodyx POS sends a QR order on to the right kitchen printer, or through POSHUB to Foodyx KDS, depending on your set-up.
Can QR ordering be used alongside table service?
Yes. QR ordering doesn't replace your staff: guests can order themselves and your team can keep taking orders, in the POS or with Mobile POS. At Foodyx, both arrive in the same POS.
What is the difference between QR Ordering and Mobile POS?
With QR Ordering, the guest orders on their own phone. With Mobile POS, your staff take the order on a handheld. Both are part of the Foodyx platform.
Can QR Ordering be used alongside a kiosk and webshop?
Yes. Kiosk, QR Ordering and Foodyx Webshop come together in Foodyx POS through POSHUB, with the same kitchen flow.
