How does an integrated card terminal work with your POS system?
Published · By Foodyx
Short answer
With an integrated card terminal, the POS system and the payment solution exchange the amount digitally. Your team then does not have to type the amount into the card terminal by hand, if the integration supports this. At Foodyx, the card terminal at the POS is connected through CM.com, the standard payment partner: the amount goes automatically from the order to the payment.
What is an integrated card terminal?
An integrated card terminal is a payment device that communicates with your POS system. The POS sends the amount due to the terminal, the guest pays, and where the integration supports it, the POS sees whether the payment succeeded.
What an integration can do differs per POS supplier and per payment provider. What the integration with one provider can do, the one with another provider cannot automatically do as well.
How does a payment run from the POS?
The order is in the POS. At checkout, the POS sends the amount through the payment integration to the card terminal and the guest pays; where the integration supports it, the result comes back to the POS. At Foodyx, the amount goes automatically from the order to the CM.com card terminal, and the payment status is then back with the order in Foodyx.

How does it differ from a standalone card terminal?
A standalone card terminal is separate from the POS. Your team types the amount into the terminal and records in the POS that it has been paid: the amount is entered twice.
With an integrated terminal, the integration takes the amount from the order. That saves a step with every payment, and the amount on the terminal is the same as in the POS.
Which payment methods can you connect?
That depends on your POS system and your payment provider: which terminals, which payment methods and which way of paying, at the counter, at the table or online.
At Foodyx there are three integrations, each for its own situation: CM.com for the card terminal at the POS and tap-to-pay on the mobile POS, Viva.com for tap-to-pay on the mobile POS, and Mollie for online payment in Foodyx Webshop.
So Mollie is not a card terminal: it is the payment step of your webshop, with the money going straight to your own Mollie account.
How does card payment work at Foodyx?
CM.com is the standard payment partner of Foodyx. The card terminal at the POS is connected to Foodyx POS: the amount goes automatically from the order to the card terminal, the guest pays, and the payment status is then back with the order in Foodyx.
You need a CM.com account with a card terminal, and the integration is set up by Foodyx. Foodyx charges no extra fees per payment; CM.com's rates are separate. More about the CM.com integration, and examples of card terminals on the hardware page.
What should you look out for with a card terminal integration?
These questions help when choosing and setting up an integrated card terminal. Where they concern Foodyx, they say how it works there.
Does your POS support your payment provider?
Not every POS works with every payment provider. Ask which providers are integrated. At Foodyx that is CM.com for the card terminal at the POS.
Does the amount go to the terminal automatically?
Check whether the POS passes on the amount, so nobody has to type it in. At Foodyx, the amount goes automatically from the order to the payment.
Does the payment status come back?
Check whether the POS can see that a payment succeeded. At Foodyx, the payment status is back with the order after the payment.
How do refunds work?
Ask how a refund works: from the POS or through the payment provider itself, and who in your team may do it.
Where do you use the terminal?
At the counter, at the table or both? For payment at the table, tap-to-pay on a mobile POS can be an alternative; read how tap-to-pay works in restaurants.
What if the connection drops?
An integrated payment needs a working connection between POS, terminal and provider. Ask how you carry on if it drops for a moment.
What does the provider charge?
Payment providers charge their own rates; check them. Foodyx charges no extra fees per payment; CM.com's rates are separate.
Do you see payments in your accounts?
Check how payments per payment method end up in your accounts. At Foodyx, sales go to Exact Online or Twinfield every day, split by payment method; read how to connect a POS system to your accounting software.
Frequently asked questions
Do I still have to type the amount into the card terminal?
Not with a working integration: the POS passes on the amount. At Foodyx, the amount goes automatically from the order to the CM.com card terminal.
Does the payment status come back to the POS?
That depends on the integration. At Foodyx, the payment status is back with the order after the payment.
Can I use several card terminals?
That differs per POS system and payment provider. Discuss during set-up how many terminals you need and where they go.
Does an integrated terminal also work with takeaway orders?
A terminal at the counter takes payment for whatever is paid there, including a takeaway order. An order already paid online, for example in your webshop, does not need to go through the terminal.
Is Mollie the same as an integrated card terminal?
No. At Foodyx, Mollie is the integration for online payment in Foodyx Webshop, with Wero / iDEAL and credit card among others. The card terminal at the POS runs through CM.com.
Which card terminals does Foodyx support?
Foodyx connects card terminals through CM.com, the standard payment partner. Examples of card terminals are on the hardware page: Ingenico and SUNMI.
